Ca’ la Ghironda - Modern Art Museum

Ca’ la Ghirobda Modern Art Museum - In Dialogue between Art and Nature, Michela Schenetti, University of Bologna

Wonderful inspiration from this outdoor museum from both landscape and sculpture gardens. We began with a lecture from the museum's education director who provided an overview of the creation of this relatively new museum.  We learned that both the sculptures and the landscapes themselves were designed as works of art - carefully composed to complement each other. We toured and admired the gardens and art, then in small groups chose one work to  focus  on and study in detail.  Each small group presented their impressions of and reactions to their focal piece.

We then engaged in the type of activity both children and adults are invited to do when visiting the museum grounds.  We chose a vantage point anywhere on the grounds and spent about an hour outdoors sketching using pencil.  Next, we divided our sketch into thirds, completing (or attempting to complete) one section using charcoal. (The other two sections were later painted.)

After a wonderful lunch of freshly prepared pasta with fresh pomodoro and basil, crostini, and two types of crudo (to say nothing of giant cannoli for dessert), we moved to the indoor atelier.  Here, we learned to make paints from natural materials, such as spinach, beets, and eggplants, and spices like tumeric, paprika, and curry, as well as from dried dirt and clays from the gardens. We experimented with making our own water colors (adding water to the natural pigments) or oil paints by adding almost any type of oil instead of water.

The rest of our time at the museum was spent completing the remaining two thirds of our sketches - one third with water color and one third with oils.  Most of us easily could have spent another two hours painting.

This was so much fun for everyone and it gave us many great ideas to incorporate into our schools at home.
